How To Bring Traffic to Your Website
Published by fongrich on Tagged Internet MarketingLast time we talked about how to create a website from scratch. It’ll probably take you a few days to figure everything out. That’s ok, it took me many years off and on to get to where I am, and I still don’t really know “html.” I know the basics in order to get the job done, and the editor does most of the job. So don’t fret if you’re not confident about it the first time around. As long as you finished the process of getting a website you created on the web, you have made significant progress. Now is just refining that skill. In the future, I’ll talk about different tricks I like to use for a more advanced strategy.
Today I’m going to talk about post-publication of your website. If you go back to my Internet Marketing Diagram, you’ll see that Internet Marketing comes in 3 steps.
1. Marketing – Bring in traffic (SEO, advertise, Forum comments, Blog comments, viral (links or word of mouth)
2. Prospecting – (Using Website & Email) Providing free information to build credibility for future sales, return visit, or referral
3. Profiting – The customer in turn click on your Adsense, buy your affiliate products (around 50% commission), and/or buy your product
You may notice that creating a website is the 2nd part of Internet Marketing step, but it’s critical that we build a website first or we’ll have nothing to market. I’m going to briefly outline the mechanics of each step and go more into detail in my future entries.
Let’s start with marketing, which involves bringing in the traffic whether it’s through search engines, links on other sites, or ads. For search engine, you’ll need to have good keywords optimized initially. So when you’re writing your content you’ll need to make sure your keywords show up at the right place and frequency. Don’t worry about it for now. It’s much easier than you think. Keyword optimization comes naturally when you get used to it. I’ll have an entry on that one. The way search engines find your website and rank you is through incoming links from other sites. The more quality and relevant websites link to you the better. So if you were developing a real estate website, it would be good to have high PageRanked real estate agent, mortgage, and any real estate related websites link to you. There are many ways to accomplish this. You could publish Ezine articles, and allow webmasters to use your content with your link at the bottom of the article. You could do a press release and have other related sites use your article on their site. You could post useful advice on forums or blogs and have your signature as a link back to your site. The most commonly used method is reciprocal links. Reciprocal links is where you link to website you would like a link exchanged. You’d email the webmaster of that website asking them to give you a link in return. Many people have abused this strategy by using link farms. Google has long caught on to the spammy linkers and punished them accordingly. I highly recommend carefully selecting the websites you want to exchange links. It is a very tedious process when done correctly, but it will pay off over the long run.
It will take a couple of month before you see any significant results. Hopefully, when everything is said and done, you’ll start getting be on the top Search Engine Results Page (SERP) for the keywords you wanted. Additionally, you’ll receive additional referrals from all those external links from other websites. Once traffic starts to come in you can start doing some testing things like layout, content and etc to make the most from your traffic.
A quicker way of bringing in traffic is buying it. You can purchase Pay Per Click ads through Adword or Overture. That’s when you bid on certain keywords and pay only when your ad is clicked on. This requires some skill to be cost efficient. Next entry, I’ll talk more in-depth about Adword, Adsense and how you can profit from it.
