Questions on Domain Registration and Hosting

Published by fongrich on Tagged Beginner Questions

Hey I checked your post again but I couldn’t find the answer to this question — what are some quality domain name hosting sites? If I were to register www.website.com, where should I go? I noticed your hosting company is BlueHost.com. How have they been so far? My main issues are the following:

Like I mentioned earlier, 1and1.com has a really cheap domain host for starters at just 3 bucks a month. I have several websites hosted there. I am trying out BlueHost.com because WordPress (this blog script publisher) recommended it. It’s about the same. I haven’t notice much difference. Of course, I haven’t really spent the time to analyze the difference. I’d just go with the cheapest and work from there. I would recommend a reputable host though, because if it’s too cheap and unknown, it could be some guy running the server in his basement.

To register a domain there are several methods. Most hosting companies provide register services. Actually, when you sign up for a hosting plan, they usually give you a free domain registration. To register more domains, I’d recommend godaddy.com or namecheap.com. The reason go through these register companies is because that’s what they do best, and they provide an easy interface for you to manage all your domains.

1. Would I own the rights to my domain name? If I were to go with BlueHost and they went under tomorrow, would my domain name still be mine, or can some schmuck swoop in and steal it from me? Basically, who is the final judge in ruling what web address belongs to who?

This is a complicated question. I never thought about if the register going under… I’ll think about that one. However, about the schmuck swooping your domain. If you “lock” your domain down, the domain can’t be transferred without unlocking it first. People can request for a transfer or you can transfer your domain to be hosted or pointed to different host. Here’s a link on how things work:

2. Do hosting companies have any say over your content? Aside from the
obvious blatantly illegal stuff, do I ever have to worry about what I post on my site?

Some hosting companies have a policy against porn, but there are special hosting companies for just porn. In most cases, as long as it’s by the book, hosting companies don’t care what you publish. Now, if you’re running some kind of script like proxy where people come through your site to go to other site anonymously, the hosting companies might have a problem because it’s really taxing on the server.

3. Unrelated topic, but if I used Google Adsense, can they tell me what I
can and can’t have on my site? You mentioned a few ways you can get screwed over, but is content one of them?

Check out Google Adsense policy:

General rule is to create family friendly content and you’ll be fine.
