Published by fongrich on Tagged Internet MarketingLast time, I talked about Adsense, Adwords and their basic workings. Today, I am going to focus more on keywords. As I mentioned, keywords are essential to how much you make in regards to Adsense. Some keywords will pay more, but it has lower search traffic and vice versa. Here are some free tools you can use to look up how a keyword will do. This is by no means 100% accurate, but it is directionally correct.

Yahoo’s Overture has a great tool that allows you to do quick keyword research to see how much the word is searched in previous month and how much it cost to post the ad. Now notice, it’s Yahoo’s data, NOT Google. When you see the search numbers, you can assume that Google gets 3 times the search. I am not sure about the cost difference, but you can assume that Google get more money for the keywords than Yahoo, since more advertisers use Google.
This site is the first place experts go to finding how much traffic a keyword will get. It’s easy to use and relationally accurate. You’ll still have to use your judgement though. There are competitors out there that want to throw you off on what is a high demand keyword. So they set robots to do artificial searches on lowly searched keywords fooling you to optimize your site to those artificially hyped keywords, while they benefit from the real profitable keywords. Don’t worry about this scenerio as it doesn’t happen often, only in super competitive fields.
This is only your prelimary research for keywords. There are more indepth keyword research sites such wordtracker.com that will help you sift out any schemes mentioned.
“View Bids Tool” - This will list the bid prices for the keyword and who’s bidding on Yahoo. You can get a good idea of how much a keyword is worth.
With these two tools, you can get a very good idea of how much a keyword is worth pursuing.
This is a very cool tool by Google. Some keywords are seasonal. Diet will be all the rage in Jan and very lowly searched in Dec. You can find seasonal trends with this tool. Also, you can compare the relative search of keywords. For example, type in “Toyota, GM, Ford and Honda” … See what is searched most. This could also help you with which stock you want to buy for the long term
Although Google Trends looks simple, it has many detailed features. Notice the region. Sometimes, you’ll want to focus in just on United States data to get a better idea of how popular the keyword may be. Remember, Google doesn’t give you exact numbers, everything is smoothed out and in relations to things. So you can’t take the data literally, you have to think about it and if it makes sense. Another cool feature is that it gives you news on the searches, so you’ll know if it’s looking at the relevent keyword.
Have fun researching keywords. It is essential research to developing a profitable Adsense website and finding your niche market.
